Contrary to popular belief, Lorem Ipsum is not simply random text. It has roots in a piece of classical Latin literature from 45 BC, making it over 2000 years old. Richard McClintock, a Latin professor at Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia, looked up one of the more obscure Latin words, consectetur, from a Lorem Ipsum passage, and going through the cites of the word in classical literature, discovered the undoubtable source. Lorem Ipsum comes from sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33 of “de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum” (The Extremes of Good and Evil) by Cicero, written in 45 BC. This book is a treatise on the theory of ethics, very popular during the Renaissance. The first line of Lorem Ipsum, “Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet..”, comes from a line in section 1.10.32.

The standard chunk of Lorem Ipsum used since the 1500s is reproduced below for those interested. Sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33 from “de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum” by Cicero are also reproduced in their exact original form, accompanied by English versions from the 1914 translation by H. Rackham.

Cisco has just released a research study which says that smartphones will outnumber people in the world this year. By 2016 smartphones are expected to increase to 10 billion – 1.4 for every man, woman and child worldwide. In 2011, global mobile data traffic was over 8 times the total worldwide Internet traffic in 2000. This year, there will be more than 100 million mobile users consuming 1GB or more per month. It’s all about the data.

How to update a Verizon Wireless 3G device:

Power on your Verizon Wireless phone.
Dial *228 from your home digital coverage area and press the "SEND" key.
When prompted, press option #2 to update your phone’s roaming capabilities. The process may take up to 2 minutes.
Once completed, a confirmation message will be played, and a message will be displayed on the phone screen.

How to update a Verizon Wireless 4G device:

Power on your Verizon Wireless phone.
Power off the phone.
Gently pull out the SIM card, then re-install it.

Rural & Long Distance Call Problems Up 2,000%

Complaints about uncompleted and slow termination of calls, poor call quality, lack of accurate caller ID information and other problems with rural and long distance phone service have become a big issue for customers, carriers and the FCC. Between April of 2010 and March of 2011 there has been a 2,000% increase in complaints about these problems received by rural telephone companies. The growing pressure for action has prompted the FCC to form the “Rural Call Completion Task Force” to investigate the issue and identify solutions.

“The problem is primarily with cable, voice over IP (VoIP) and other companies that pay local carriers to complete long distance calls,” says Walt Grudi, President and CEO of Grudi Associates, a leading provider of telecom and IT services in Central PA and beyond. “To compete, these companies charge fixed and very low rates, with the termination fees coming right off their bottom lines. Up to now, there has been little incentive for them to ensure that all their calls are efficiently completed or completed at all. The FCC needs to step up and address the problem, quickly and firmly.”

The FCC’s charge is to determine the extent of the problem, identify the cause and formulate solutions. It’s first “workshop” was held on October 18, 2011.

“The best thing customers can do to address the situation is to put pressure on the FCC to ensure these companies are held to the same standards as any other provider,” continues Grudi. “Contacting the FCC directly and copying your legislators is a good start.”

Tablet Ownership Nearly Doubles Over Holidays

US adult ownership of tablets and e-readers nearly doubled from 10% to 19% between mid-December 2011 and early January 2012, according to a Pew Internet & American Life Project research study.
