Unless you totally filter out all incoming news, you’re probably aware of the scandal related to ex-CIA Director and Retired General David Patraeus, General John Allen and others. We won’t rehash the scandal here, but it is important to point out that unsecured emails are at the heart of the story, offering a good lesson everyone should learn. First, make sure your business telecom and IT systems have reliable, adequate security. Second, implement prudent policies and best practices for all communications, internal and external. Third, never communicate anything through email that would be damaging if it were exposed. Once an email is sent, you can never get it back, and it is likely that it will continue to exist in the cloud long after it has been deleted on your computer. It is hard to say if the FBI or anyone else is monitoring your email, so it’s best to take precautions.
